When Spring Break Isn’t Just a Break: The Frustration of Overreach During Downtime
Spring break is supposed to be a pause—a time to recharge—yet this year the Downtime seems to be overwritten by emails from Head Start that feel more controlling than considerate. Even though the program is officially closed for the week, and the contract may not require ongoing outreach during this period, the persistent messages push schedules and expectations in ways that stress families and staff rather than support children.
This isn’t just about logistics; it’s about a power dynamic that can erode trust and blur boundaries between responsibility and overreach. If the contract excludes certain weeks, those exclusions should guide communications, not be overridden by blanket emails that imply penalties or micromanagement during a holiday.
